*These two majestic, male lions were originally named Leo Aster and Leo Lenox after two major NYPL benefactors, John Jacob Astor and James Lenox. But during the Great Depression Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia renamed them Patience and Fortitude because he felt these were the qualities New Yorkers need to survive the brutally harsh economic times.
