A wee bit like Patience and Fortitude* who have been guarding the Main Branch of the New York Public Library since it opened in 1911 |
*These two majestic, male lions were originally named Leo Aster and Leo Lenox after two major NYPL benefactors, John Jacob Astor and James Lenox. But during the Great Depression Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia renamed them Patience and Fortitude because he felt these were the qualities New Yorkers need to survive the brutally harsh economic times.
