So what went wrong with the Sausalito rental? A few things I explained to the owner - nicely - like a bit too small for Callie, my yoga mat and me. True. But I was silent on the steep ladder up to the bedroom loft. It was chrome, shiny, beautiful, elegant, firmly embedded in the wall and I didn't want to be uncool and admit it actually scared me. Loft rooms have always had that effect on me since I saw them coming into ski condos in Sun Valley. They always looked Sooo cool and I always felt secretly frumpy thinking 'Better them than me.'
